It’s fair to say that vampires and in particular the Dracula character is one of the real archetypes of the horror genre. My fondness for the character is no secret and is clear from my commentary on Bram Stoker’s Dracula and my review of C.C. Humphreys’ Vlad.
Now, Vampirophiles can delight in the fact that Stoker’s creation is scheduled for a number of big screen treatments in 2012, starting with Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D, an article of which can be found here.
Two other projects which will see the resurrection of Stoker’s Count in 2012 are The Last Voyage of Demeter and Dracula Year Zero.
The info that we have for The Last Voyage of Demeter is that the project is in pre-production and is set to star Noomi Rapace, Jude Law and Sir Ben Kingsley; and is slated for a release in 2013 with the following brief synopsis:
“Based on a chapter in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” which describes the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the steering wheel. Stoker tells the story via the captain’s log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear, unaware of their undead passenger…”
Demeter will be directed by David Slade, the man at the helm for 30 Days of Night (good) and Twilight: Eclipse (bad).
Also up in 2012 will be Alex Proyas’ (I, Robot, Knowing) take on the tale of Count Dracula in Dracula Year Zero, which sees Sam Worthington (Terminator: Salvation, Avatar) in the role of Vlad Dracula and proceedings are set in Romania of the 15th century, during the invasion of the Ottoman Empire and Vlad goes to the greatest of lengths to fight for his homeland…even if it means selling his soul and becoming forever doomed to a life as a creature of the night.
This particular project is listed as being still in development and has been on the boil for a few years with little movement but the rumour mill seems to have filming of this project taking place in Australia… but when?
In the meantime, I wait with bated breath for further news on all of the above and will do my level best to bring any and all updates to you as they come to us here at AndyErupts.

I would so love to see Dracula Year Zero be released this year! Seeing Dracula as an antihero and main protagonist would be refresher course for the vampire genre and hopes to instill greater value to dark books out there as well!
