When I spotted the title of this project, my interest was immediately piqued. I have suggested to Andy in the past that, maybe somewhat controversially, if you’re looking for horror, you don’t have to go any further than the Bible for inspiration. It is full of hellions, fallen angels, possessions, promiscuous women, brutal characters and my personal favourite horror sub-genre, the apocalypse.
However, it would seem that the horror of biblical proportions only goes so far as the name where this project is concerned…
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to CEO of Crystal Sky Steven Paul about the film at Cannes: “Crystal Sky will go into production this summer on Dracula: The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, to be shot on location in Romania. Pearry Reginald Teo (Necromentia) is directing. Paul is looking to cast a star in the lead.
“It’s the first installment in a franchise about a young, romantic Prince of Darkness, his Army of the Undead and a series of events that shake Transylvania to its core,” said Paul, who calls the vampires “the bad boys” of their time. He said the intent is to create a Twilight-type franchise, which will spin off movie after movie in years to come.”
A “Twilight-type franchise“? This is NOT music to my ears. I thought that 2012 would see a return to prominence within the genre for the archetypal Count with projects such as: The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Dracula: Year Zero, Argento’s Dracula 3D and so on and I truly hope that Paul’s reference to a franchise is simply an aspiration to make a series of financially successful films and not to turn Dracula into some sort of angsty, sparkly bloodsucker.
More on this as it comes to us, fiends…
