News has just come to us that the 66th Edinburgh International Film Festival will open with Killer Joe.
Variously billed as horror, dark comedy and violent thriller, Killer Joe is directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The Hunted, The French Connection) and boasts a cast including: Matthew McConaughey (A Time To Kill, Reign of Fire, The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild, Alpha Dog, Milk), Juno Temple (Jack and Diane, The Other Boleyn Girl) and the Oscar-nominated Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3, Sideways).
The film comes with the following synopsis:
“When 22-year-old drug dealer Chris (Hirsch) has his stash stolen by his mother, he has to come up with $6,000 quick or he’s dead. Desperate, he turns to “Killer Joe” (McConaughey) when he finds out that his mother’s life insurance policy is worth $50,000. Although Joe usually demands cash up front, he finds himself willing to bend the rules in exchange for Chris’ attractive younger sister, Dottie (Temple), who will serve as sexual collateral until the money comes in… if it ever does.”
Killer Joe comes to Edinburgh on 20 June and has already performed well at North American film festivals and in some European festivals also. Thereafter, the film gets a theatrical release in the British Isles on 29 June, followed by a limited theatrical run in the USA as of 27 July.
