I miss my old VHS player. The shoebox-sized tapes, the tracking issues and degraded picture. The garbled sound and the ever-present fear that your aging machine’s tape-heads will chew your beloved tapes in to an unwatchable mess of unravelled black, glossy tape.
I no longer have a VHS player. All I am left with is a humungous pile of antiques that I cannot watch and cannot sell.
However, I digress… The Edinburgh International Film Festival kicks off in Scotland’s capital city on the 20th of June, and brings with it some pretty nifty genre films.
Including this one…
A huge success at SXSW, V/H/S combines the considerable directing skills of Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets) and Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead) into one anthology film that has already garnered rave reviews.
The synopsis is as follows,
A gang is hired to break into a desolate house and steal a rare VHS cassette. Inside they encounter a problem when they discover a corpse in front of a television, surrounded by… hundreds of videotapes. As they start to search through the recordings, some truly disturbing stories begin to unfold… Providing the indelible last word in “found footage” horror, this cleverly devised anthology, written and directed by a selection of new and rising genre talent, is contemporary cinema at its most frightening.
You can catch V/H/S at two separate screenings. One on June 28th at 23.20 at The Cameo and again, on the 30th at 22.00 at the Filmhouse.
