On this day in horror…
1865 marks the death of Doctor Edward William Pritchard. Convicted of murdering his wife and mother-in-law by poisoning them and untried on the alleged murder of a servant girl, Pritchard was nicknamed “The Human Crocodile” by the press of the day and was the last man to be publicly executed in my hometown of Glasgow, Scotland. His story has been recounted and dramatised in such tales as Dr Angelus and is even referenced in the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
